The late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan

The late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was the eldest son of the Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and served as the second President of the United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Khalifa was born in 1948 and received his education at Al Nahyaniya School in Al Ain.

In August 1966, he was appointed Representative of the Ruler of Abu Dhabi in the Eastern Region. On February 1, 1969, he was named Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and on July 1, 1971, became the first Prime Minister of Abu Dhabi, while also holding the portfolios of Defense and Finance. On January 20, 1974, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Cabinet, and in 1976, he assumed the position of Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the United Arab Emirates. Throughout these formative years, Sheikh Khalifa stood as a steadfast supporter of Sheikh Zayed in the nation-building process and in the realization of the UAE’s comprehensive renaissance.

On November 3, 2004, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan became President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Under his wise leadership, the UAE experienced remarkable progress and modernization across all sectors. His reign was marked by a focus on enhancing citizens’ welfare, advancing national infrastructure, and strengthening the country’s global standing. Deeply loved by his people, Sheikh Khalifa was known for his humility, approachability, and unwavering dedication to the prosperity of the UAE and the well-being of its people.

On Friday, May 13, 2022, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan passed away, leaving behind a distinguished legacy of leadership, generosity, and devotion to his nation — a legacy that continues to inspire the UAE’s ongoing journey of progress and development.
